      STORIE:

From the get-go, Dev and I agreed that there are only a few things that really matter at a wedding. Good food, good music and lekker people. Devin, an ichthyologist, (he studied fish) only had two requests. Our Hermanus favourite, Old Harbour Lager, on tap – lots of it, and fish names instead of table numbers. We both really just wanted a special celebration that felt like “us” instead of just going with whatever is cool or trendy. And with so much family coming from abroad, we loved the idea of a two day celebration and Elandskloof was perfect with enough accommodation for all 100 guests. Bonus: it was only an hour from home. We are blessed with the most amazing community, friends and family that helped with, lent and gifted so much of what we needed. All the decor came from my house, my mom’s house and a friend’s garage. Nothing really matched, but it was all “us”. There was sentiment in everything. The easel was my grandfather’s. The Nguni rug we made our vows on is the one our dog sits on every night to get his bedtime sweets. The stands the ceremony flowers were on were side tables from both our parents’ homes. I am a “laatlam” and only daughter after three boys. My mom spent months making our confetti. She gathered and pressed little flowers, coloured leaves, rose petals and even bougainvillea she specially went to pick on the farm I grew up on. I made my own dress with no pattern, from tablecloths and bits of lace from both my grandmothers, sewn onto a second hand dress from my shop that I cut up and used as a base and added some trims from Temu! I made all the corsages, boutonnieres and my bridesmaids’ “wearable” flowers myself and I loved every second. I also made my own bouquet – with seasonal favourites plus wheat for my farmer dad, blushing brides, like my mom had in her bouquet 57 years ago and even bunny tails I collected from our family beach house before we sold it. Devin’s family is Scottish and our Ichthyologist friend played the bagpipes for us!
